Vamos a Pescar returns to ESU with fishing, crafts and a fish fry

by Brian Osbourn

Emporia, KS (09/18/2025) — Emporia State University welcomes the community to Vamos a Pescar, celebrating the outdoors on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The free event, hosted annually at ESU's Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center, offers a family-friendly experience featuring fishing, conservation and outdoor fun.

Those new to fishing and experienced anglers alike will learn techniques, understand rules and regulations, explore water safety and participate in hands-on educational programming.

Other activities include archery, hunting practices, nature crafts, a Storywalk in English and Spanish and hiking. Giveaways, free resources and prizes for participants are planned. The day wraps up with a free fish fry lunch and Freddy's Frozen Custard beginning at noon on the PAROC deck.

Vamos a Pescar is a collaborative effort that also includes the Emporia Public Schools Migrant Education Program, What's In Outdoors, Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. The event would not be possible without the support of several local business, organizations and volunteers.

PAROC will also host a Science Storytime event for children 7 and younger on Thursday, Sept. 25 from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Activities include reading a book, games and crafts-all about trees. Parents and guardians are asked to join their child at the free event, which promises to be fun and educational for everyone. Children should be registered individually by visiting esuparoc.com. Seating is limited.
