Presentation Explores Black Americans and the Great Migration

The release was updated to include donor information.

Emporia, KS (08/31/2023) — MEDIA RELEASE:

On September 6, Emporia State University Special Collections and Archives will present the exhibit A Journey Toward Freedom: Black Americans and the Great Migration. An opening reception will be from 2:00 to 4:00 PM in the exhibit hall on the first floor of ESU's William Allen White Library. The Great Migration was the largest domestic movement in American history. During the century following the Civil War, over six million Black Americans left the southern United States to move north and west. Visitors to the exhibit can learn more about the motivations for this movement and the impact of the Great Migration on locations where migrants made their homes, including Emporia.

This exhibit was made possible by the generous estate gift of Carol Marshall to endow the Black Emporia Interpretations and Connections collection.
