Peterson Planetarium celebrates Pluto 20 years after reclassification
Emporia, KS (08/13/2026) — Emporia State University's Peterson Planetarium will mark the 20th anniversary of Pluto's reclassification as a dwarf planet with two free public presentations led by Peterson Planetarium Director Mark Brown, a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador.
In August 2006, the International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto, sparking debate, curiosity and even outrage around the globe. Two decades later, Pluto remains one of the most fascinating and beloved worlds in our solar system.
The presentation, "Pluto: Demoted, but Not Forgotten," will revisit the story behind the decision, explain what defines a planet and explore why Pluto continues to capture our imaginations. The program also will highlight NASA's historic New Horizons mission, which transformed Pluto from a distant, blurry point of light into a dynamic, surprisingly complex world. Attendees will see the breathtaking first close-up images of Pluto captured in 2015, revealing towering mountains, nitrogen glaciers, a layered atmosphere and a world far more remarkable than expected.
Two presentations are scheduled:
- Monday, Aug. 24, from noon to 1 p.m. in Science Hall 177, SMEC. This special Lunch and Learn invites attendees to bring their own lunch.
- Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Science Hall 072.

No registration is required, and both events are open to the public.
