ESU to Host National Weather Service Storm Safety & Spotter Training

by Gwendolynne Larson

Emporia, KS (03/20/2024) — The annual storm safety and spotter training offered by the National Weather Service will be held at Emporia State for 2024.

On Wednesday, March 27, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Topeka will present weather safety information. This training will focus on severe storm safety, preparedness, and awareness. Storm structure and accurate identification of important cloud features associated with supercell and squall line thunderstorms will also be covered.

The session will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Preston Family Room on the second floor of ESU's Memorial Union, 1331 Market St.

"Storm safety information is extremely important," said Jennifer Millbern, ESU emergency manager. "We appreciate having the session on campus because it will be valuable for ESU students, especially those who are not from the Midwest or areas prone to tornadoes and other severe storms."

The event is free and open to the public. An important component is training the general public to be storm spotters who can help during storms.

"This training provides first responders and residents with the necessary information to ensure situational awareness during severe weather events," said Jarrod Fell, director of Lyon County Emergency Management. "Without training like this and the expertise of the storm spotters, law enforcement wouldn't be able to monitor all 855 square miles of Lyon County to get notifications out in times of severe weather."
