ESU's King Lake Upgraded to Watch

by Gwendolynne Larson

Emporia, KS (08/23/2024) — Emporia State's King Lake is now in a watch for blue-green algae after follow-up water sampling by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The watch means that a harmful algae bloom may be present.

The watch includes these recommendations from KDHE:

  • Use caution when in contact with water and wash with clean water after.
  • Avoid areas of algae accumulation.
  • Do not let pets eat dried algae or drink untreated water.
  • If fish are caught, clean well and discard guts.
