ESU's King Lake Again in Blue-Green Algae Warning

Vamos a Pescar Event Will Be Modified

by Gwendolynne Larson

Emporia, KS (09/27/2024) — Emporia State's King Lake is now under a waring for blue-green algae after follow-up water sampling by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The warning means that a harmful algae bloom is expected or present.

Saturday's Vamos a Pescar event at the Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. will continue with some modifications. There will be no canoeing or kayaking on the water. Fishing is still allowed, and organizers will follow all of the recommended precautions.

The warning includes these recommendations from KDHE:

  • Water is unsafe for humans and animals.
  • Avoid all contact with water.
  • Inhalation of spray or aerosols may be harmful.
  • Do not let pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.
  • If fish are caught, clean well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.
