Emporia State's King Lake To Be Restocked with Rainbow Trout

Emporia, KS (11/24/2025) — King Lake on the Emporia State University campus will receive its first stock of rainbow trout for the 2025-26 season after Thanksgiving. The first of three stockings will happen around Dec. 1. This is thanks to an ongoing partnership between the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) and the university.

Two more stocks of fish will be added, one in January and one in February for a total of about 1,500 fish or 1,050 pounds. Fishing in King Lake follows Kansas state fishing requirements:

  • Trout season runs from December 1 to March 31.
  • All anglers at King Lake between these dates need to possess a trout permit.
  • The daily creel limit is five trout.

King Lake opened to public fishing in April 2022.
