Blue-Green Algae Warning Remains for ESU's King Lake

Emporia, KS (07/12/2024) — The warning for blue-green algae at Emporia State's King Lake remains in effect after follow-up water sampling by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The warning means that a harmful algae bloom is expected or present.

The warning includes these recommendations from KDHE:

  • Water is unsafe for humans and animals.
  • Avoid all contact with water.
  • Inhalation of spray or aerosols may be harmful.
  • Do not let pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.
  • If fish are caught, clean well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.
