by Gwendolynne Larson

Emporia, KS (06/28/2024) — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a warning for blue-green algae at King Lake on the north end of the Emporia State University. This means that a harmful algae bloom is expected or present.

The warning includes these recommendations from KDHE:

  • Water is unsafe for humans and animals.
  • Avoid all contact with water.
  • Inhalation of spray or aerosols may be harmful.
  • Do not let pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.
  • If fish are caught, clean well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.

The next resampling is tentatively scheduled for July 8.
