Presidential Outstanding Advocate Awards: Jeff + Gwen Longbine, HOTT, KVOE

Emporia, KS (09/19/2024) — A highlight of Emporia State University's Homecoming Week will be the recognition of several organizations and individuals for their remarkable contributions as ESU advocates.

Recipients of the 2024 Outstanding Advocate Awards will be honored Oct. 4 during the Black + Gold Gala at ESU's Memorial Union.

"At Emporia State we know that our community is integral to who we are. We are deeply grateful for all who support the university in any way," said Ken Hush, Emporia State University president. "Last year began a tradition of recognizing our community, friends and partners who are difference makers advancing our community and our university. This year, I am humbled and full of gratitude as we recognize this group of truly Outstanding Advocates."

The honorees:

Kansas state Senator Jeff Longbine and his wife, Gwen Longbine, will receive the Presidential Award for ESU & Community Advancement in Kansas. As a legislator, businessman and community leader, Sen. Longbine has consistently played an instrumental legislative role for the university, particularly during its implementation of the ESU Model. Gwen Longbine has a diverse professional background in appraisal, media sales and real estate, which she has used to benefit the university. As an original member of Women for ESU, she has tirelessly supported fundraising initiatives and played a crucial role in welcoming and assisting countless students and employees as they transition to the Emporia community. Her contributions extend to various boards and committees, where her insights and leadership continue to make a lasting impact.

"Gwen and I were surprised and humbled when President Hush announced that we were to be honored with the Outstanding Advocate Award," Sen. Longbine said. "ESU has been a huge part of our lives since we first met at ESU. From our education, following the Hornet athletic teams and serving on numerous committees and boards, ESU has positively impacted our lives almost on a daily basis for almost 40 years. We are honored to receive this award but can think of many people who may be more deserving."

Hispanics of Today + Tomorrow (HOTT) will receive the Presidential Award for Community Partnerships. Under the leadership of its president, Sally Sanchez, HOTT has become a tireless advocate for education within the local Hispanic community and continues to be a strong supporter and partner of ESU. Not only has the organization's annual cultural events, Cinco de Mayo and Dia de los Muertos, become highlights of the Lyon County event calendar, HOTT has awarded $104,000 in scholarships to students of Hispanic heritage to pursue their college degrees.

"We are honored to accept this Community Advocate Award for our efforts in advocating for the Hispanic community in Emporia," Sanchez said. "Our journey over the past 25 years has awarded $115,000 to 335 Emporia High School graduates. We are grateful for Emporia State University and its commitment to match scholarships to students attending Emporia State University. Together we can impact for a lifetime."

Emporia news outlet KVOE will receive the Presidential Award for Media Excellence for their longstanding dedication to consistent and balanced reporting and commitment to serving the community. It is the flagship station of the Hornet Sports Network.
