New Hornets Receive Prestigious Scholarships

HOMETOWN INTEREST for Council Grove, Emporia, Olathe, Protection and Shawnee, Kansas

Emporia, KS (02/27/2025) — Five Kansas high school seniors planning to attend Emporia State University in fall 2025 were recognized Wednesday, Feb. 26, with prestigious scholarships from the public regional institution. The presentations came during halftime of the ESU Hornets basketball game against Missouri Western University.

Two scholarships were awarded. The Pre-Medical Fellowship awards $10,000 payable as $2,500 per year for four years. Recipients must remain on the pre-medical track through their ESU careers and maintain full-time academic status with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0. The fellowship also includes a paid clinical internship in the summer of the student's junior year.

The Pre-Medical Fellowship was created in 2017 by medical professionals who are ESU alumni and friends to recruit exceptional incoming freshmen and support them in their pursuit of being admitted to medical school.

The Virginia Endly Memorial Scholarship is a one-year full-ride scholarship that covers the cost of tuition and fees, room and board and meals for any student of any major. The scholarship was established by Merle Endly, whose family has a long history with Emporia State University dating back to the early 1900s, in honor of his sister Virginia.

Recipients of the Pre-Medical Fellowships are Colee Butler from Emporia High School and Mikayla Hutchinson from Council Grove High School.

The three recipients of the Virginia Endly Memorial Scholarships are Luke Dent of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, Hayden Napierala, a homeschooled student from Protection, Kansas; and Kaylan Ulmer of Olathe West High School.
