Hands-on fun with rocks, minerals and wire-wrapping this November at ESU's PAROC

Emporia, KS (11/06/2025) — Variety and creativity are the themes at Emporia State's Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center in November with STEM-related events that include learning about rocks, arts and crafts with wire and storytime for younger students.

Science Saturday kicks off the month on Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to noon with an exploration of the beauty of geological formations. ESU assistant professor Rachel Bowes and graduate student Ryan Olsen lead an interactive session where attendees explore the science behind rocks and minerals, followed by multiple hands-on stations and an opportunity to show their creativity by making a rock-art necklace or keychain to take home. All ages are welcome at this exciting free event, but space is limited. Register each attendee individually at esuparoc.com.

Later that day, from 1 to 3 p.m., PAROC and Rabid Arts & Crafts partner to present a hands-on wire-wrapping workshop. Attendees will learn the wire basics and craft two wearable art pendants - a classic Tree of Life and a quartz crystal wrap. All tools will be provided and may be purchased for $6. The project kit for both pendants is $12.

No experience is necessary, but space is limited. Email paroc@emporia.edu to request a space at this unique art-meets-science opportunity. The Wire-Wrapping Workshop is for those ages 16 and older.

Younger science enthusiasts are invited to Science Storytime at PAROC on Thursday, Nov. 20, from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Children will read a story, sing songs, play a fun game and make a craft centered around the four seasons. Little scientists will learn about weather, animals and plants in each season, and create a seasonal craft to take home. Designed for preschoolers, Science Storytime is free, but all attendees must register individually at esuparoc.com.
