Emporia State Now Offering $63 College Courses to Area High School Students

Emporia, KS (04/19/2024) — High school junior and seniors who want a Jump Start on their college careers now have an option to take college classes on the Emporia State University campus for just $21 per credit hour. This scholarship offering to our regional high school students is another example of the university's commitment to reduce costs for students and their families.

Jump Start at ESU is a program that offers high school students the opportunity to take up to nine credit hours of college courses per fall and spring semester and up to six hours during summer semesters.

New for fall 2024 is the option to come to the campus in Emporia with access to campus resources including: Hornet ID Card, William Allen White Library, Academic Center for Excellence + Student Success, Canvas, Memorial Union + Center for Student Involvement.

"These on-campus Jump Start students will have access to ESU's tools designed for student success," said Dr. Mary Shivley, associate dean of the Honors College, which organizes the program. "These include tutoring, writing help and library access."

Students who enroll in Jump Start both their junior and senior years of high school could earn a total of 36 college credits, which is 30% of the minimum hours required for a bachelor's degree.

The key to a seamless integration of on-campus college classes during high school is new partnerships between the university and area high schools. These partnerships will include ESU Jump Start classes scheduled in half-day blocks that make it easy for high school students who are involved in extracurricular activities.

Shivley and other ESU officials will be on the road in late April and early May to share information at schools in Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties as well as the nearby towns of Council Grove, Cottonwood Falls and Madison.
