Emporia State Announces Burnett as Inaugural Dean of the School of Science + Mathematics
Emporia, KS (11/14/2024) — The inaugural dean of Emporia State University's School of Science and Mathematics brings more than 30 years of experience as an educator including 22 years as a faculty member at ESU.
Brent Thomas, provost and vice president for academic affairs, announced the promotion of Dr. Tim Burnett to be the permanent dean. Burnett has served as interim dean since 2023.
"Dr. Burnett brings a wealth of experience," said Thomas. "The science and mathematics programs at ESU have a long history of providing students with meaningful hands-on learning opportunities and Dr. Burnett is fully prepared to build upon those rich traditions."
Prior to serving as interim dean, Burnett served as chair of the department of biological sciences for six years. He is currently an associate professor of biology, a role he has held since 2008. In 2011 he was recognized with the faculty scholar award from the Kansas IdEA Network of Biomedical Research, received the designation of "Assessment Champion" from the Office of Institutional Research in 2015, and excellence in teaching from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2016. Burnett came to ESU as a visiting assistant professor after holding several teaching assistant positions and teaching chemistry and biology at Olathe East High School.
Burnett has a well-established history of professional publications, research presentations and successful grant proposals. He is the director of student research programs and a member of the executive committee of K-INBRE. Through his leadership, Burnett obtained significant external support for ESU's undergraduate research programs from K-INBRE, expanding hands-on learning opportunities in his laboratory and across campus. Similarly, Burnett helped lead successful efforts to grow undergraduate research opportunities across campus and expand ESU's annual Research and Creativity Day, a showcase of scholarly and creative work of students and faculty.
"I am deeply honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve as the dean of the School of Science and Mathematics," Burnett said.
Burnett earned a bachelor of science in secondary education from Kansas State University, a bachelor of science in cell biology from the University of Kansas and a Ph.D. in anatomy and cell biology from the University of Kansas Medical Center.
