Emporia State student-athlete Jennifer Heerey inducted into honor society

2011 May 25

During ceremonies May 4, Jennifer Heerey of Wichita, Kan., was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma national college athlete honor society at Emporia State University.

The mission and objectives of Chi Alpha Sigma are to encourage and reward high academic scholarship of college athletes; to recognize outstanding academic achievement; to encourage good citizenship, moral character, and friendship; to recognize and honor the individual athlete, his or her team, sport, athletic department, and college or university; and to mentor and provide leadership to other athletes.

The organization was founded in May 1996 by Nick Mourouzis, head football coach and professor of kinesiology at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. According to NCAHS.org, "Mourouzis recognized that there were many organizations that honored top or elite athletes with high academic achievements, but none that honored all participants of athletic teams who were letter winners of their sport and who maintained a high cumulative grade point average."

Qualifications to be inducted included earning a letter in an NCAA varsity sport, having a grade point average of at least 3.40, an endorsement from the head coach and good moral character.

Heerey is on the softball team.
