Breah Butler awarded scholarship for adaptive special education work

2014 Oct 31

Breah Butler of Manhattan, Kansas, is one of 22 graduate students sharing in over $45,000 in scholarships awarded in the adaptive special education graduate program at Emporia State University. The total awarded for the 2014-15 academic year is nearly double last year's amount.

The scholarships are funded from nine endowments. Butler's award was from the Nettie B. Cartmel and Mattiepearl Heath Scholarship and Carrollyn J. Helbert and Oneida Elizabeth Ziegler Memorial Scholarship.

"These endowments are a reflection of the legacy of support for the adaptive special education program at Emporia State University," said Marjorie Bock, professor in the Department of Elementary Education/Early Childhood/Special Education. "We are grateful for the generosity of donors who have a vision to help equip teachers, administrators and schools to serve children with special needs."

Emporia State University's adaptive special education program is unique in that it offers students the option of a 24-credit-hour special education endorsement or a 36-credit-hour master's degree. Both the endorsement and the master's degree are available entirely online.

Every year, during the fall semester and beginning of the spring semester, graduate students pursuing master's degrees in adaptive special education are encouraged to apply for a number of scholarships available through the program. Students interested in applying for scholarships for the 2015-16 year may check the program website for application information at http://www.emporia.edu/elecse/sped/adaptive.html.
