Abbi Timmermeyer in Emporia State production of 'Blithe Spirit'

2014 Jun 16

Abbi Timmermeyer of Andover, Kansas, is a member of the 60th anniversary company of Emporia State University Summer Theatre. The troupe opened is season June 11 with a four-show run of the Noel Coward classic comedy "Blithe Spirit," which also was part of the inaugural season in 1955.

"Blithe Spirit" tells the story of a fussy, cantankerous novelist named Charles Condomine. He is remarried but is being haunted by the ghost of his late first wife. The clever and insistent Elvira was called up by a visiting "happy medium" called Madame Arcati. As the worldly and unworldly personalities clash, Charles' current wife Ruth is accidentally killed. Soon, she joins Elvira and the two "blithe spirits" haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.

The show was first produced on Broadway at the Morosco Theatre in 1941. It was revived in an award-winning production starring Rupert Everett and Angela Lansbury in 2009. Lansbury revived her performance in London in March of this year.

Emporia State University Summer Theatre opened in 1955 with its first season put together by Karl Bruder. It featured eight productions -- one each week for eight weeks. The 60th season follows the more recent tradition of producing four shows in eight weeks.
